New surgeons join department
Dr. Srinivas Kavuturu trained as a general surgery in India and became a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He completed a new residency in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, followed by two fellowships at Hershey; one in surgical oncology and one in minimally invasive foregut surgery. Dr. Kavuturu’s research interests include outcomes studies and the development of new minimally invasive technology. Dr. Kavuturu will focus his practice on both surgical oncology and benign minimally invasive robotic foregut surgery such as antireflux procedures for GERD. He will operate at both Sparrow and Ingham Hospitals after joining the faculty on October 1, 2011 as an Assistant Professor.
Dr. Harvey Bumpers is a senior and broadly experienced surgical oncologist who most recently served as Professor and Interim Chair of Surgery at the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, GA. He also served as Director of Surgical Oncology and Breast Services where he received numerous awards as an outstanding clinician and educator. He has research interests in the genomics of cancer and the translational application of nanotechnology to cancer care. His academic efforts have been supported by both the NIH and the Department of Defense. Dr. Bumpers will focus his practice on breast care in the community and will operate primarily out of Sparrow Hospital. He will join our Department as Professor and Director of the MSU Breast Program effective November 1, 2011.
