Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the Michigan State University Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery. The residency program originated in 1988 and is currently a part of MSU's College of Human Medicine (CHM), Graduate Medical Education program..
Faculty, residents and medical students work together to serve some of Michigan’s most underserved and vulnerable members. Our program is affiliated with the Lansing and Flint campuses; two of seven MSU affiliated campuses:
- Grand Rapids Medical Education & Research Center
- Kalamazoo Center For Medical Studies
- Lansing Area Campuses
- Flint Area Medical Education
- Saginaw Synergy Medical Education Alliance
- Marquette - Upper Peninsula Campus
- Traverse City
Our residency program is a five-year, non-pyramidal program that accepts four categorical residents each year from accredited allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. Preliminary positions are also available at the Program Director's discretion.
In addition, we have a 1 year fellowship position in Surgical Critical Care that is available to general surgery applicants PGY3 or higher.
On June 29, 2010, the MSU Integrated Residency Program in General Surgery was awarded 5 years of continued accreditation from the RRC. We are very proud of the MSU Program and look forward to a dynamic future that will continue to emphasize academic excellence and produce highly skilled practicing surgeons.
The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program under the leadership of Dr. Chet Morrison was awarded 4 years of continued accreditation from the RRC, effective June 24, 2010! We have successfully graduated 2 Fellows over the previous 2 years; most recently, Dr. Paul Schneider who will continue his career with MSU as a faculty member within the Trauma and Critical Care Division.
Please review the additional information provided on the residency pages. I welcome any input and comments regarding our program. If I can assist you, please feel free to contact me directly or one of our residency coordinators.
